You will go through thousands of wipes before your little one is out of diapers, and they spend more time against your baby's skin than almost anything else you buy. So it is worth a few minutes to get them right.
The trouble is that every package says gentle, natural and pure, and almost none of them tell you what is actually in the wipe. If you are looking for the best non-toxic baby wipes, the shortcut is simple: the shortest ingredient list, no fragrance, and a certification from somebody other than the brand.
Here are our favorites, and what makes each one different.
What to Look for in a Baby Wipe
A wipe is a cloth plus a liquid. Nearly all of the difference is in those two things.
The liquid. Good wipes are 99% or more purified water. Everything after that should be countable on one hand, usually a humectant, a mild cleanser and a preservative. If you cannot count the ingredients, that is your answer.
The cloth. Most eco wipes are viscose or bamboo viscose, which is plant-derived but chemically regenerated. Cotton is cotton, and unbleached cotton skips the whitening step altogether. This is the biggest real difference between wipes, and hardly anyone talks about it.
Fragrance. The clearest documented cause of wipe-related irritation, and the one thing we will not compromise on.
Preservatives. Phenoxyethanol is the industry standard and is generally well tolerated. The two with a documented sensitization record, methylisothiazolinone and methylchloroisothiazolinone, were phased out of most baby wipes after 2014, but they still turn up in cheap store brands. It is worth reading the back.
Certification. "Natural" means nothing on its own. EWG Verified, Ecocert COSMOS, OEKO-TEX and Allergy UK each mean something specific, because each one is awarded by an independent body.
Why We Prefer Fewer Ingredients
Your baby's skin barrier is still developing, and the diaper area is the most sensitive real estate on their body. Every additional ingredient in a wipe is one more thing to react to, and very few of them are earning their place.
The wipes below all pass the basics. What separates them is the cloth, the certification, and who they are really for.
Our Favorite Non-Toxic Baby Wipes
1. raan Unbleached 100% Cotton — best overall
The Only Unbleached, 100% Cotton Baby Wipe for Sensitive Skin — $39.96
Five ingredients, 99% purified water, dermatologist tested, and a cloth that is genuinely cotton rather than a regenerated plant fiber. Every other wipe here involves a fiber that has been chemically processed into existence. This one skipped that step, and it is unbleached on top of it. They are thick enough that you reach for fewer per change, which closes the price gap more than the sticker suggests.
Best for: Sensitive skin, and anyone who wants the shortest possible ingredient list.
There is also a pocket version at $14.99, individually wrapped and genuinely useful in a diaper bag.
2. Jackson Reece Kinder by Nature — best for eczema
Plant Based Baby Wipes — $51.61
These were developed by parents of children with eczema, and it shows. More than 99% of the ingredients come from natural vegetable or plant extracts, with aloe vera and chamomile to soothe irritated skin, on a plastic-free cloth that composts in about 60 days. Pediatrician approved and made in the UK.
Best for: Eczema-prone and reactive skin.
Also available as a case of 12 packs at $51.32, which is the better buy once you know they work for you.
3. Eco by Naty — best certified
Unscented 100% Compostable and Plant-Based Wipes — $45.85
The only wipe here carrying both Ecocert COSMOS and OK Biobased TÜV — two independent bodies, one checking the formulation and one checking the bio-based content. Unscented, hypoallergenic, made from ultrathin natural fibers, and home compostable in about 12 weeks, which is the fastest figure in the category. Naty has been doing this in Sweden for nearly 27 years.
Best for: Parents whose standard is "someone independent has checked this."
4. Joonya — best everyday value
Joonya Baby Wipes — $28.80
Fragrance free, with organic aloe vera, chamomile and jojoba, on an FSC 100% certified viscose cloth that is biodegradable and compostable. Dermatest approved for all skin types. Joonya is also the diaper brand that publishes its harmful chemical test results, and a company willing to do that has usually earned some trust.
Best for: Everyday use, and pairing with Joonya diapers.
5. Kudos — best if you already use their diapers
One-Month Supply of Wipes, 4 Packs — $24.00
EWG certified, which is a meaningful independent mark, and the most affordable option per wipe that we carry. If you are already using Kudos diapers, the Diaper & Wipes Bundle at $119 covers both in one order.
Best for: Value, and simplifying your reorder.
6. ManuKind Manuka Honey — best for a rough patch
Manuka Honey Baby Wipes — $7.99
99.4% New Zealand purified water, MG650+ manuka honey and certified organic aloe vera. This is not the everyday wipe. It is the one to reach for during a bad week, or for faces and hands when you want something a little more soothing. At $7.99 it is also the easiest thing here to try.
Best for: Sore patches, and face and hand wipes.

What We Didn't Recommend, and Why
We would rather be useful than sell you everything on the shelf.
- Any wipe with fragrance or "parfum," at any price. It is the most common cause of wipe-related irritation, and there is nothing on the other side of the scale.
- Wipes preserved with MI or MCI. Mostly phased out of baby wipes after 2014, but still around in some store brands. Both have a documented contact sensitization record.
- "Flushable" wipes. They are not, whatever the package says, and the claim confuses a plumbing question with a skin one.
- Anything advertised as "chemical free." Water is a chemical. Precision matters when a brand is making safety claims.
- Boogie saline wipes. We carry them and they are great, but Boogie Wipes are saline wipes for runny noses, not diaper change wipes. Different job entirely.
Lifestyle Tips for Happier Skin
- Use fewer, better wipes. A thicker wipe you use one of beats three thin ones.
- Pat, don't scrub. Friction on already-sore skin is usually the culprit.
- Let skin dry for a moment before the fresh diaper goes on.
- Pair with a barrier cream — Earth Mama Organic Diaper Balm is a favorite here.
- Keep something no-sting on the changing table. Our own Clean Bean Rescue Spray, $15.99, is three ingredients and does not sting on sore skin.
- Check the diaper too. If irritation keeps coming back, see our guides to Millie Moon, Honest and Hello Bello diapers.
When to Seek Medical Advice
Please consult your pediatrician if a rash is spreading, blistering or weeping, if it is not improving after a few days of gentle care, or if there is a fever alongside it. Our post on soothing baby rashes naturally covers the day-to-day care.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the safest baby wipes?
The ones with the shortest ingredient list, no fragrance, and independent certification. In practice that means 99% or more purified water, a handful of named ingredients, and a mark like EWG Verified, Ecocert COSMOS or OK Biobased TÜV. raan and Eco by Naty are the clearest examples here.
Are water wipes better than regular baby wipes?
Usually, though "water wipes" is a marketing phrase rather than a standard. What matters is the full ingredient list and the cloth. A 99% water wipe on a chemically regenerated fiber is not obviously better than a five-ingredient wipe on unbleached cotton.
Which baby wipes are best for eczema?
Look for no fragrance, no alcohol, a minimal preservative system and a soft, low-friction cloth. Jackson Reece Kinder by Nature was developed specifically by parents of children with eczema. Always patch test first, and follow your pediatrician or dermatologist's guidance on a diagnosed condition.
Are compostable baby wipes really compostable?
The cloth is, under the stated conditions — about 12 weeks for Eco by Naty and around 60 days for Jackson Reece. That covers the fiber, not the packaging, and home compost conditions vary. It is a real environmental improvement rather than a disposal instruction.
Are bamboo baby wipes non-toxic?
Usually fine, but bamboo describes a source plant, not a process. Most bamboo wipes are bamboo viscose, which is chemically regenerated. Judge the certification and the ingredient list rather than the plant on the package.
