Honest is often the first clean diaper brand a new parent hears about, and for good reason. If you have been wondering are Honest diapers non-toxic, you have probably already found a dozen articles that answer it by relitigating a lawsuit from ten years ago. We would rather look at the diaper.
The short answer is yes. Honest Clean Conscious diapers are fragrance free, paraben free, latex free and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified. Better still, Honest publishes a full ingredient list, which almost no diaper brand does.
That list is also where the interesting detail lives, so let's go through it together.
Give Honest Credit First
Most diaper brands tell you what is not in the diaper. Honest tells you what is. Here is their published breakdown:
- Absorbent bio-core: wood pulp from responsibly managed forests, sodium polyacrylate (the superabsorbent polymer) containing some renewable content, and odor inhibitors including citrus extract and liquid chlorophyll.
- Outer layer: plant-based PLA and polyethylene.
- Inner layer: polyethylene and polypropylene.
- Leg and waist system: polymer spandex and polypropylene.
- Seams and joints: polyolefin adhesives.
- Free from: fragrance, elemental chlorine, parabens and natural rubber latex.
- Certified: OEKO-TEX Standard 100.
That is a real ingredient list, and you can actually evaluate it. We wish more brands did this.
The Chlorine Detail Worth Knowing
Honest's sustainability pages describe wood harvested from managed pine and spruce forests in Scandinavia, turned into fluff pulp at a Swedish mill using a totally chlorine free process, with 100% of the fluff pulp FSC certified or from controlled sources.
Honest's ingredient disclosure describes the absorbent bio-core as containing elemental chlorine free (ECF) wood pulp.
Both of those can be true at once. A brand can source from more than one mill, and elemental chlorine free is the floor claim that also covers a totally chlorine free supply. The fair reading is that Honest guarantees ECF, and some or all of their pulp is TCF. The guarantee on the label is ECF.
What the difference actually is: ECF bleaches pulp with chlorine dioxide. TCF uses oxygen, ozone or peroxide, and no chlorine compound at all. The dioxin worry you may have read about traces back to the elemental chlorine process the industry abandoned in the 1990s, not to ECF. ECF pulp is not a hazard to your baby. TCF simply closes the question, which is why the brands we carry state it.
The Ingredients Parents Ask Us About
Sodium polyacrylate, or SAP. This is the gel that turns liquid into crystals. It is in essentially every disposable diaper on the market, including every clean brand in this article. It has been used since the 1980s, it is not absorbed through skin, and those occasional little gel beads you find on your baby are inert. If you want a diaper with no SAP at all, the answer is cloth, not a different disposable.
PLA. Polylactic acid, a plastic made from corn starch rather than petroleum. It is a genuine improvement in how the material is sourced. It still behaves like plastic in the diaper, and it does not make the diaper compostable in your garden.
Citrus extract and liquid chlorophyll. These are the odor inhibitors, and they are worth flagging if your little one has a citrus sensitivity. This is the one thing Honest includes that the diapers we carry do not — Kudos and Joonya use no odor additive at all.
About Those Lawsuits
If you search this question you will find pages built entirely on the 2015 to 2017 lawsuits over Honest's sunscreen and laundry detergent formulations. Those were real, they were resolved, and they were not about diapers. The company has also gone public since, and now discloses ingredients at a level it did not a decade ago.
We think the current diaper should be judged on the list above. It holds up.

What We Didn't Recommend, and Why
- Any diaper with added fragrance. It is the clearest documented cause of irritation in the diaper area, and there is no benefit to weigh against it.
- Diapers marketed as "chemical free." Water is a chemical. Precision matters when you are making safety claims.
- "Biodegradable" disposables. No mainstream disposable diaper composts at home, whatever the bag says. Plant-derived PLA improves sourcing, and that is a real thing, but it is not the same claim.

- Change more often. Time spent damp is usually the biggest factor.
